‘When Green Becomes Tomatoes’ by Julie Fogliano: Poems for All Seasons

I remember vividly as a child learning the poem, ‘I wandered lonely as a Cloud’ by William Wordsworth and have always loved reading poems. As the girls grew up they really enjoyed the rhythmic world of Julia Donaldson and all the fun wordery of Dr Seuss’ ‘Cat in the Hat’ series. Even though the girls have grown up now we still enjoy finding a poem and reading it together.

We have always adored Julie Fogliano’s work, and ‘If You Want to See a Whale’ has been thoroughly enjoyed by the girls so when I saw Julie had written this delightful book of short poems to celebrate the season I knew we would love it. ‘When Green Becomes Tomatoes’ is utterly divine! Each page is filled with intricate gouache and pencil illustrations by Julie Morstad and includes sweet poems celebrating the natural world. The seasons come to life through the words and pictures, each dated throughout the year, the poems are short and sweet, nostalgic and romantic. It’s a wonderful book for children of all ages to be introduced to the world of poetry.

Do you read poetry with your children? I would love to know what you enjoy together.

And if you love Morstad’s illustrations as much as we do, have a look at her gorgeous book, ‘Julia, Child’ .
