Thomas Sires - A boutique for women, children, and home in Nolita
I popped into the boutique Thomas Sires, in Manhattan's Nolita neighborhood, on a dreary February day and it was just the bright spot I needed during these last few weeks of winter, when it seems spring may never come back around again. In the store, which carries gorgeous items for women, children, and home, the ...

Books Are Magic
A neighborhood bookstore is so much more than simply a place to purchase books, don't you think? As a local, a bookstore's a place to be home without being home, a second living room, a place to gather, relax, mingle and watch your children dive headfirst into the magical worlds only books reveal. As a ...

Dumbo Baby, a children's boutique in Brooklyn
Dumbo Baby is a lovely new children's boutique in Dumbo Brooklyn, adding to the list of reasons (Jane's Carousel and Brooklyn Bridge Park chief among them!) that this neighborhood makes for a perfect family outing. The boutique is a brick-and-mortar home for A Gifted Baby and Galileo Linens, both members of the shopping portal, and ...

CW Pencil Enterprise
I love New York for many reasons, but the existence of specialized shops like CW Pencil Enterprise -- an entire store devoted to  pencils (!) - ranks high on the list. I'm by no means a pencil expert, but the selection here seems near-encyclopedic, and with a budding little writer on my hands it was ...

Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab
The proliferation of chain stores in New York often means fewer and fewer of the mom-and-pop stores that give neighborhoods so much of their character and heart. In the past year alone, our neighborhood lost one independent bookshop to rising rent and taxes, and another downsized to a much smaller space to avoid an anticipated ...

Sockerbit
We don't eat a lot of candy in our house (or at least not while our daughter is awake...shhh!), but I'll confess to having an abiding love for sour gummy candy. A small pouch of Sour Patch Kids can be picked up at any hour in any drug store or bodega, but a far better ...

Norman & Jules Toy Shop
Like most apartment-dwellers in New York, the amount of space available in our home for toys and playthings is relatively modest. In theory this means I try to be thoughtful about new items brought home or gifted to us, doing my best to rotate toys to keep them fresh and to remove items that are ...

Tiny Brooklyn
Running through the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens, Court Street's commercial appeal lies in its fascinating mix of restaurants and shops. Some of them have been there for decades, reflecting the needs of the Italian immigrants who flocked to the area in the late 19th century, while others are far newer, serving a changing neighborhood ...

As convenient as Amazon and other similar websites can be, leisurely browsing a good bookstore is a thrill all its own. BIG #babyccinoreads: Large format reference books are great. We love that super-size allows for attention to detail, attractive illustrations and much concentration. With reference books, our need for specifics is all that more important. We like that reference books provide information on the exact hue of the orange of an Emperor penguin’s beak or which exact countries the River Nile runs through, so it’s easy for children to soak up. Today we share some of our favourite #bigbooks ... what are yours? @themontessoristudio
