OUT OF TOWN
Untermyer Park and Gardens
It's no secret that as a family we like spending time in parks, gardens, and green spaces - it helps to balance out our city living, I suppose - and I've written about some of our favorite places previously in posts about Wave Hill, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Storm King Art Center. We recently made ...

Day Trip to Dia:Beacon
Eighty minutes north of New York City sits Dia:Beacon, one of New York's great destinations for viewing contemporary art. Housed in a former Nabisco box factory, the expansive galleries contain the Dia Art Foundation's collection of art from the 1960s to the present, and it's a joy to meander through the the maze of rooms spread over ...

Day Trip: Storm King Art Center
We anticipated being out of town this past weekend, but as sometimes happens our plans changed last minute and we woke up at home on Saturday morning to stunning blue skies outside our windows and a full day ahead of us without any obligations whatsoever. Intent on enjoying the beauty of an absolutely perfect fall day, ...

Day Trip: Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture
Even the most ardent city-dwellers can sometimes hunger for a bit of a breather somewhere else: to feel grass underfoot, see trees on the horizon, and hear the persistent buzzing that fills the heavy stillness of a hot summer day. For me the perfect escape is Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, a working ...

Mayflower Inn and Spa
Since having my girls, my husband and I have only taken 3 short weekend trips away from home. Six nights. Four years. Exactly six times where I have slept past 7:30 in the morning. Now before you call me a loser… just wait… it gets even worse. Those six nights were all spent at the ...

Turtle Back Zoo -- Who Knew?!
This past weekend we did a Saturday field trip to New Jersey to a place called Turtle Back Zoo. A quick 14 mile drive from lower Manhattan, the large 15-acre zoo has over 850 animals and it was a truly incredible place to spend the afternoon. Not only was I blown away by the huge ...

The unspeakable: A trip to New Jersey
I kid. I am after all a New Yorker and it’s in my DNA to pick on New Jersey. Truth be told however, I find myself going there quite often with my kids on day trips. One of my very favorite go-to spots is the Liberty Science Center, which (dare I say) blows all of ...

This Spiced Apple and Honey Cake is one of our favourites and the girls love getting involved and crowning it with the apple slices and drizzling over the honey. The recipe is really quick and versatile and you can use whichever flour you have to hand — plain will give you a lighter bouncy sponge, spelt a drier denser texture but a wonderful rich flavour and ground almonds will give you a dense but super moist cake. Today’s new post from Lara “Seek is the one and only app that our (young) children use. It started in lockdown over the Spring, as things sprung to life, and our children would ask us ‘what’s that?’ So my husband found the answer, which was for all of us to learn more from the world of amazing digital technology by using a free app (and find out more about the amazing world!). We think it is so outstanding actually and have told so many friends and family members to use it too, because it teaches them about the world and nature! I should quickly add that this is not a sponsored post! It is just a great tip I wanted to share.” And we love this thought... “You don’t have to travel far to find weird and beautiful wildlife. Your garden, local park, street tree, window box or the verge alongside a local footpath are rich ecosystems filled with species… you’ll be able to identify any living thing in your patch – plants, flowers, insects, fungi, birds and animals. It’s like having a naturalist in your pocket! When you ID a species you’ll be able to find out all about it, and see how common or rare it is for your area and the time of year.” More about the app in our bio link. But tell us, are you using any interesting educational apps for nature or science? ps And stay tuned for more about her holiday on a lighthouse island in @laraoflondon ‘s post next week! #babyccinokids #babyccinotips #babyccinotravels #seek

Autumn Equinox — a note from Esther... “I was talking to Lara earlier today, and she was reminding me of the start of Autumn happening today. Autumn! Today, the bright daylight hours and the dark nightly hours are of equal length. From now on, the days will get shorter, the nights will get longer… until the longest night, Winter Solstice (taking place on December 21st) will mark the beginning of the Winter season. Today is Autumn Equinox: the night and the day are in perfect balance. It marks the moment of the sun entering Libra (my star sign!), bringing harmony and stability, and which is ruled by Venus, the planet of love and beauty. All good things, and definitely things we need in these uncertain, difficult and turbulent times. Autumn is when the air starts to feel crisper and smell muddier, when the colours of nature are intensifying before they change colour, when the light is low and magical, when the days get wetter and the weather gets windier. It is the time to harvest apples and nuts and pumpkins, to make pies and soups and stews and to cosy up the house with rugs, pillows and blankets. Fall is so cosy! To celebrate this First Day of Autumn, I thought it would be nice to make a list of all the little things, family traditions and crafts we love doing in fall. Most we have posted about before, but there are some new ideas and things I want to try as well. Going through old posts and getting this list together has been so inspiring — yes, we are entering the darker and colder months, but there is so much to do and make, and many of these activities are super simple and made with whatever nature supplies us with. Fall truly is fabulous!” xx Esther Enjoy @estherbabyccino fifteen favourite fall activities to get inspired, link in bio. #babyccinokids #babyccinotips #autumnequinox @maudfontein 🧡
