SKIN CARE AND MAKE UP
Homemade natural lip balm with beeswax and shea butter
'Tis the season! Of chapped lips and dry cheeks. All of my children have been complaining about dry lips and have been asking for lip balm. I've been reading some negative things about over-the-counter chapstick though, like the use of ingredients such as petroleum jelly / petrolatum (vaseline) and parabens. Things I don't want my kids ...

Spots & Stripes -- skincare for tweens
Helena is coming up on 11. How that has come around so quickly I do not know! But it was only the other day when it hit. I passed her our beautifully floral packaged, organic baby wash and she was appalled I was asking her to bathe in it. I also realised her skin was ...

Skincare and make-up products I like to use (and are quick to apply!)
I am by no means a make-up expert. I don't use a lot of it (in fact, I just spent six weeks in a campervan without ANY make-up!). My childhood was quite, well, childish, and I didn't use mascara until I was 18 and left the house to go and study in Delft. There, during ...

Natural pregnancy skincare by Eve & Rose
My belly is big and round now and I just feel the skin stretching around it. So tight! Also, the itching is terrible, and comes in waves. My legs, my arms, my back (especially there where I can not reach)... All so itchy! It's part of the pregnancy deal, of course, and thankfully temporary (almost ...

Periods and eco-friendly menstrual products
It might be a bit of a strange subject for me to talk about periods and eco friendly menstrual products at the moment, given the fact that I haven't menstruated for over 7 months now. However, I've recently been talking with friends about menstrual cups (there's the MoonCup, the OrganiCup and the DivaCup, for example), ...

A 'first period' box, to prepare for the first menstruation
Slowly but steadily I'm getting the news of Sara's friends getting their first period. Between the age of 11 and 13 it will most likely take place. (Of course some girls are younger, and some are older.) Sara is not there yet, but it might not be that long now! Do you remember getting your ...

Homemade Lavender Essential Oil
If I had to choose my favorite summer smell it would be the smell of the sea and lavender. Unfortunately I can’t bottle up the first one but I can do that with the lavender! And if only I knew how very easy it is to do it I’d make tens of them every year. ...

Make Your Own Sunscreen at Home!
I was playing with an idea of making a sunscreen at home for a while because I’m very picky when it comes to them: they first need to be mineral without nanoparticles and can’t have any perfumes and/or nasty chemicals in them -- I even wrote a post a while ago about it. And when I ...

Schmidt's: A natural deodorant for the entire family
If you have a little girl around the age of nine, there's a big fat chance that one day you will stand next to her and realise that it's not your own armpits you're smelling, but those of your daughter. Suddenly, that innocent baby of yours will have a first wave of hormones going through ...

Make your own Mouthwash
I was talking to Esther a few weeks ago and she asked me if I ever made a mouthwash myself and it was kind of funny because I was just thinking about trying to. Sadly most store-bought mouthwashes contain all sorts of toxins and chemicals that you don’t really need in order to fight bacteria ...

Natural Mascara from Gaya: a must-have!
I (used to) love make-up. That was pre-kids when time was something I still had, but now to be honest I’m too lazy for it. I only use mascara when I don’t forget and a concealer when the nights are too rough. Another thing is that I'm really complicated when it comes to skincare products. ...

My favourite cruelty-free skincare products
My daughter has started developing her activist streak and it is really making me think about my shopping habits and attitudes. I absolutely agree with her that testing on animals is not a great thing, but have to admit I can easily forget to think about it when out shopping. But seeing the earnestness in ...

Thursday Thoughts: To shave or not to shave
Okay ladies, a funny thing happened to me this week. I posted this photo (above) on my Instagram feed to feature a watch brand I like and to talk about the two opposing sides of my personal style, as reflected by my wrists. But, the comments and conversation quickly became focused on my arm hair!!! Some people told me "it looked gross," while others suggested I ...

So here is light and fluffy post for your Friday. Esther and I hung out last weekend as she was in town for the trade shows. We spent a lot of time giggling and being a bit ridiculous, and this year we decided that, instead of spending our night in the bars of my neighbourhood, we would ...

My favourite sunsreen -- Aesop's Protective Body Lotion SPF50
I have applied sunscreen every day for the past five months. It's become a normal part of my morning routine: brush teeth, wash face, apply sunscreen. The year of positive change! A belated Happy New Year to all of you!! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays, and the first weeks of 2020 have been good for you. For Courtney, the year has had a rocky start. The devastating fires in Australia have been keeping all of our minds occupied. Thankfully rain is on its way, and hopefully the fires will be under control soon. But the destruction has taken place and the wake-up call has been heard and noted. We have to act now! Let's make 2020 the year of positive change. Simple changes can be made on a personal level. Maybe, after reading this newsletter, we can all take a bit of time to act or reflect? Here are some ideas you can start thinking about: 1. Let's try to drive less! Walking or using a bike are better for our health as well as our planet. Taking public transport is fun! Or drive electric. Fly less: have your meetings virtual and go somewhere local for your holidays. Or take the train, instead of the plane! 2. Eat local and seasonal. Become a flexitarian (or even better, a vegetarian). Eating less animal proteins has a direct impact on your carbon footprint. 3. Repair, re-use, recycle and refuse. If you can, shop responsibly (ethical, green and sustainable). Respect what you already have, mend, pass on to others. 4. Replace fossil fuels (oil, carbon, natural gas) with renewable energy sources. Switch to a 'green' energy provider, perhaps install solar panels. Be more energy efficient. Turn the heating down a notch, wear woollens and blankets to stay warm. 5. If you have funds, invest them wisely. (Not in companies related to the fossil fuel industry, for example, but in 'clean' organisations instead.) When it's time to vote, vote! And vote wisely. Don't feel that one person or one family can not make a difference. Social scientists have discovered that if we see our peers take environmental action, we adjust our beliefs and actions accordingly. So it's worth the effort! Thanks as always for following and reading. xxx Esther
