Can you believe we are already one third done with this year’s autumn season! But there is still time to make more decorations if like me you enjoy this time a year. After seeing all the beautiful fall leaves wall hanging all over Instagram, we had to make one of our own. This is actually the first time we made one. My daughter really enjoys making little objects with clay. And, we recently purchased a few new cookies cutters. So, a couple of weeks ago, we made some clay “cookies”. We let them dry and almost forgot about them…

Here is how we made clay and fall leaves wall hanging for autumn, and I am glad we remembered to use them:

1. We rolled out your clay and created some shapes using the cookie cutters, and we also made sure to pierce some holes in  the clay (we used a large nail).
2. We then let them air dry for about 1/2 an hour before we baked them on the lowest setting of our oven for another 1/2 hour or so.
3. A few days later, we decided to paint some of them. But keeping the natural colour of the clay can also be a beautiful option. Here is another tip: you may want to glaze them and make them shiny instead of mat. That will also keep the paint from fading.
4. Finally, we used some thin craft wire to attach them with other leaves etc. We selected a piece wood with little hooks from the craft store. But any branch will do! I also thought about using a copper rod we have as a temporary support but opted not to for this display. Both dried and freshly fallen leaves helped to add texture and interest, as well as some acorns, a conker and a piece of dried conker shell.

At first, we only attached the clay pieces and decided on the length. Then, I took the project over and finished assembling everything else while the display was on the wall. I am not sure if that is the best way to do this, but it worked for me. And the result is quite nice I think.  So, have fun with organic treasures from your neighbourhood.
