OUT OF TOWN

Ascot — a fabulous family day at the races

Ascot is synonymous with showcasing the best of British and horses. Which makes sense, after all, as it has been home to thoroughbred horse racing since 1711. Some people may think Ascot is an institution filled with fancy fascinators (feathery hats!), horses, and only designed for grown-up adults. But after a truly blissful day with our family of four, I can tell you that Ascot is for all ages. It is not too formal or too traditional, it is part of British culture, and it was such fun that everyone should plan a day (or more) at Ascot.

To really get ready and get in the mood, we played this song from My Fair Lady, (a cinematic classic) while getting dressed. It is not essential, but highly recommended. 🙂 Then we headed on the train out of London and had a picturesque trip to Ascot.  Ascot is a small town in East Berkshire, England, 6 miles south of Windsor, 4 miles east of Bracknell and 25 miles west of London. So it is also a great little weekend away if you want to make an overnight trip of it!

Families are welcomed, catered to, and embraced at Ascot.  There are family specific dates, so look months ahead at the calendar! Our Autumn November Fireworks family day was so memorable (ending with a spectacular finale of fireworks) and truly magical. There is great info here to prepare you before you visit, and you quickly realise there is more than horses! Even at Christmas there if plenty of fun at Ascot!

When we went to Ascot, activities varied from fairground rides, including tea cups, mini jets and helter skelter, and clip-clop Pony Rides that my little ones loved. But really, we found the racing the most magical part of it all. Even Joseph, only 18 months old, simply loved the energy, the strength, and the speed of the horses racing.

There are plenty of casual and Fine Dining options for families at Ascot. A family picnic lawn will allow parents to watch the racing with exceptional views. Child-friendly dishes will be available from The Bandstand Restaurant, and the racecourse’s popular Queen Anne Enclosure restaurant, where children under 12 eat free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Luckily we even had a fun 15 minute moment with Tatler.  So very fun!  Thank you again to Ascot for opening our eyes to this lovely day out.  And for sharing these images with us. Such a special day!

Enjoy your day at Ascot!
