As I mentioned in an earlier post, we recently spent a few weeks in my family’s beach house on Bainbridge Island, spending lots of time inside due to wet, rainy weather. The kids were blowing through books at a quicker rate than normal, which, of course, was wonderful to see.
Quin, who has never been our most avid reader, has turned a corner in the past month. It’s always been a bit of a battle to get him to read 20 minutes a day, but lately we’ve found him curled up on the sofa reading for hours without ever being asked to do it. What a joy!!
I thought I’d share some of the books the boys (ages 11 and 9) have enjoyed lately in case you’re looking for book inspiration:
Please share any books your children have enjoyed lately. We’re excited to start making use of our local library in Byron Bay!

Thanks for sharing! I’d love to know what your girls are enjoying reading! Sx
Have you been to Mary Ryan’s yet? My boys LOVE the childrens section (and we enjoy a coffee in the sunshine outside!)
My 9 and 6 year old boys are devouring Australian series Zac Power – Quin – and Ivy – may enjoy these
Additionally – they love the Treehouse Series – by Andy Griffith and Terry Denton
My 11 year old son (also a reluctant reader) is loving The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime right now. I look forward to finding some of the books off your list for his Christmas stocking!
The boys love David Walliams so I’ve bought his latest release for them for Christmas 🙂 My eldest just finished Lord of the Rings and is onto the Two Two Towers and the 7yo is ploughing his way through the Hobbit!
My 10 year old daughter – Wonder (will be a movie with Julia Roberts). We love it! and Hunger Games!!
Excellent timing, as I’ve been compiling a new list of books for Di. He’s also been reading the Henry books by Cleary! Recent favs have also included the Akimbo series by Alexander McCall Smith about a boy adventuring in Africa and El Deafo by CeCe Bell. It’s a semi-autobiographical graphic novel about being deaf. Seeing our kids curled up with good books – it’s so endearing! 😊❤️
Thank you for these suggestions. My 9 year old son has recently finished reading the Ramona series by Beverley Cleary so I will definitely order the Henry Huggins books for his Christmas. Sadly my 11 year old boy is an extremely reluctant reader despite all my best efforts! I do however insist on him reading 20 minutes before bed. Books they have both enjoyed recently are One Dog And His Boy by Eva Ibbotson, The Boy Who Sailed The Ocean In An Armchair by Lara Williamson, The Parent Agency by David Baddiel and Stig Of The Dump by Clive King. Live in hope my 11year old will grow to love books as much as his Mum 😉
Great recommendations – thank you! My son and I are reading the Hiassen books aloud for the past several months and are really enjoying them. For the first time ever, I am reading Roald Dahl books with my daughter and both my kids (ages 7 and 10) really love them. One other suggestion is books by Sharon Creech. Two books in particular – Love That Dog and Hate That Cat. They are written in free verse poems from the perspective of a ~10-11 year old boy and are just fantastic books to read solo or aloud.
Another vote for the Treehouse series – a must read for Australian kiddos! 😉
Thank you! Great suggestions in the post and in the comments.
The Australian author Glenda Millard has written a beautiful series of books called the Kingdom of Silk. I recommend them to everyone I know and my girls own and love them all. Just a warning that the first book is sad but certain themes are well explained and the stories are real and true and heartwarming.
I’d love for them to read my book, “Spirit of the Wind”. It is available on every country’s Amazon and they might enjoy it because it’s all about animals and adventure.
