Doughnut Plant

FullSizeRender-3

A few doors down Grand Street from Kossar’s Bialys is Doughnut Plant, home of some of my favorite doughnuts in the city. The perfect sweet ending to a progressive breakfast (is there is such a thing? There should be!), you’ll be tempted to sample every last flavor. Now a mini doughnut empire with four New York Stores (two in Manhattan, one each in Brooklyn and Queens), the Grand Street location is the original.

Signs on the walls of the shop point out all of the pioneering ideas they’ve brought to the world of doughnut making: jelly-filled square doughnuts! Fresh seasonal fruit and nut glazes! The world’s first crème brûlée doughnut! Luckily, taste never takes a back seat to innovation and these doughnuts are crowd-pleasers. Styles include yeast, filled, and cake doughnuts, with flavors ranging from peanut butter & blackberry jam to carrot cake to matcha green tea to strawberry. This past weekend we took our time selecting three doughnuts, and as soon as our tray hit the table two dimpled toddler hands shot out to grab the tres leches one my husband selected. Five minutes later, flakes of milky glaze flecking her hands, face, tights, and the bench below, the doughnut was gone and my husband had to settle for the cinnamon sugar one I intended for her. Thank goodness even the consolation prize at Doughnut Plant is pretty delicious!
