Fresh Books for the Shelf, to help bring cultural heritage into the lives of our children
FUN
At the beginning of December we held the Babyccino Shopup event, and myself and the wonderful panel of women who joined us discussed how we are bringing our cultural heritage into the lives of our children. Some decisions seem simple, like celebrating Christmas or Eid, for example. Those around us are celebrating too and not ...

Cauliflower Tikka Masala -- oven-baked in 30 minutes
This recipe combines two of my favourite things: Indian spices and oven-baking! The recipe uses a very straightforward homemade curry paste which might sound a bit daunting and time intensive but I assure you this is super easy, ready in 5 minutes and so worth it! You could substitute in other vegetables such as pumpkin ...

Galettes de Rois -- a goûter of a French tradition in January
A goûter, or a taste, of kings' cake is a tradition in France during January. Traditionally this cake, known as a Galettes des Rois, marks the celebration of Three Kings Day / Epiphany / Twelth Night. Fortunately it is celebrated for the entire month of January, so the good news is that you can still ...

Do you talk about being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender with your kids?
Earlier this week, a successful beauty blogger here in the Netherlands, Nikkie de Jager (@nikkietutorials), publicly announced that she is transgender. A very brave thing to do -- I watched her coming out video on YouTube and was incredibly impressed by her story and the way she chose to share it. I recommend you to ...

Walnut Boat Races -- an easy craft with hours of play

One Tray Dinner -- A Salmon with Crusted Sesame and Pak Choi
We love having meals together as a family, but with various work, club, school, and nap schedules, it gets a bit complicated some weekdays. But we value good, healthy, home cooked meals around the table together, so we had to find a good way to achieve this in an easy way. And tray baking, or ...

Winter Scavenger Hunt - a fun outside activity
Here in the Northern Hemisphere, December means shorter, darker and often colder days, which can sometimes make getting outside feel difficult, especially in the late afternoons and early evenings after the sun has already set. If you're looking for an idea to help children run off that pre-dinner energy, let me suggest a winter scavenger ...

Earlier this week, a successful beauty blogger in the Netherlands, Nikkie de Jager @nikkietutorials publicly announced that she is transgender. A very brave thing to do and was incredibly impressed by her story and the way she chose to share it. If you haven’t seen it yet, there is a lot to learn from Nikkie’s coming out video on youtube. It is an inspiring message from a strong roll model, addressing young people who feel insecure, misunderstood or simply not in the right place. It is about acceptance, respect, hearing and understanding each other, about writing your own story, about the power of being yourself — whoever you are and whatever you are. It is also about the importance of supportive parenting. Nikkie shares that she is intensely grateful for her mother, who always saw and heard, listened and understood, respected and supported her in her choices and in her transition. We have always tried to be straightforward in discussing sex and reproduction with our children, and open about the idea that heterosexuality is just one shade of a wider spectrum of diversity. Thanks for the new blog post @estherbabyccino ... what are your thoughts? Comment below and link is in bio. #babyccinokids #thursdaythoughts
